International Law Association – Nigerian Branch (ILA Nigeria)
The Committee on Migration Governance and International Law is a flagship body of the Nigerian Branch of the International Law Association (ILA Nigeria), dedicated to advancing legal and policy solutions to migration-related challenges at the national, regional, and international levels.
Led by Dr. Aderomola Adeola, the Committee provides a vital platform for engagement on migration issues as they intersect with international law. It conducts studies, clarifies legal questions, and contributes to the development of both national and international legal frameworks governing migration.
Key areas of focus
- Promoting discussions on safe, orderly, and regular migration
- Facilitating cooperation among states, international organizations, and key stakeholders
- Advocating for cohesive and effective legal frameworks on migration
- Supporting research, analysis, and publication of reports on migration law and policy
- Organizing conferences, workshops, and expert forums to share insights and best practices
- Serving as a forum for interdisciplinary exchange among migration and legal practitioners
- Contributing to and supporting the ILA Committee on International Migration and International Law
Despite progress in Nigeria—such as the enactment of the Immigration Act, the National Migration Policy, and the National Policy on Labour Migration—implementation challenges persist. The Committee plays a crucial role in bridging policy gaps, offering expert legal insight, and shaping a stronger, rights-based migration governance system aligned with global standards.
Through its impactful initiatives, the Committee not only strengthens Nigeria’s migration governance framework but also contributes to regional stability, sustainable development, and global legal discourse on migration.
